Maria Westwell

Maria initially founded ‘Stansfield Sports Injury Clinic’ based in Bolton in 2012 after studying Science
in 2005 at Edge Hill University. Specialising in Biomechanics and gaining a Bachelor of Science degree with honours, she then went on to complete her Master of Science degree in Sports Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire, which allowed accreditation to The Society of Sports Therapists. Maria has also completed specialist training in Acupuncture for Sports and Musculoskeletal conditions.
2018 saw Maria gain her Chartered Scientist accreditation from the Science Council, which is a highly respected status, following on by winning the Bolton Health & Wellbeing Awards ‘Unsung Hero’ award voted by her clients. She has also recently completed in-depth training in Women’s Health meaning she is able to offer these services to her clients.
Maria has a wide range of experience in elite sports including 8 years with Wigan Warriors Rugby
League and 3 years as Consultant Therapist with the First team. She also worked with England Rugby League First team for several years. During her time with Wigan Warriors she contributed to their success of winning the Super League Grand Final twice, Challenge Cup twice and the World Club challenge. In addition to her experience in rugby league, Maria has worked foremost of her career with runners of all abilities, including Olympic and European, with a specialty in marathon, ultra-runners, and triathletes. Maria has also worked for many years with Boxers and MMA athletes of different levels from amateur to professional, also working recently with Manchester City Women’s Football club. Her main area of interest is the foot and ankle; conditions including stress fractures, shin conditions, plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies.
With a background in Biomechanics and additional training, she is able to custom-made orthotics.
Maria also has a wide array of experience in post-surgery conditions and rehabilitation including:-
ACL reconstruction, shoulder labral repairs and stabilisations, also treating childhood and adolescent conditions such as Juvenile Arthritis and growth plate fractures, as well as Women’s Health pregnancy and postpartum-related conditions.
